Tom Baker to return for Doctor Who 50th Anniversary!?!?!

I had to share this as it is awesome to me! I am sharing with you what the Lovely Ladies of The Mary Sue wrote as they did a better job than I could right now. I am too giddy about it! Thank you Ladies!

Whovians, rejoice! Maybe? According to recent reports, Tom Baker–the fourth incarnation of the Doctor–will return to Doctor Who next year for the big 50th anniversary extravaganza. On the show from 1974 to 1981, Baker is now 78 and, according to admittedly rumory rumors, heis  to reprise his role.
One of the reasons to doubt the rumors? Baker has apparently been pretty public in the past about the fact that he thinks Doctor Who ruined his career–although he also admitted it was the “loveliest job [he] ever had.” There’s also the event of the 20th anniversary, in 1983, where Baker refused to return, forcing producers to substitute a wax figure with him during the photocall.

Baker has not been completely closed off to returning to the series, however; he said this on the matter, after all: I think if they ask me nicely or I can see what they want me to do, I’d consider it. I think the fans have been so good to me, they’d expect me to at least make an appearance.

And now outlet upon outlet are reporting that he will indeed be coming back to Who next season, and we’d be happy to have him back on our screens. We certainly are fans of his scarf.

A Doctor Who insider spilled some beans to the Daily Express: It will be fitting to have Tom back to mark the 50 years. He was a big part of the show’s success and is much-loved by the fans. As for the anniversary extravaganza episode(s?) itself, word’s still out on what exactly it will entail. There are other rumors floating around that the episode will also serve as Matt Smith’s last episode as the Doctor, so you can expect plenty of hype to surround it in general.

Inspiration in the most unlikely places

“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child -- our own two eyes. All is a miracle.” ~ Thich Nhat Hanh Photo: http://www.imaginaryfoundation.com/store/mens-t.html

And there is your beautiful thought for today.

Look, they built Sharon Apple!

So I am dating myself by posting this but when I was younger MacCross Plus was a great anime with this singer, Sharon Apple. She was a holigraphic singer who amazed her audiences.  And now there is a real version of this in the world.

Montana Beauty ~ Family vacation August 13-17, 2012

Off the grid. Underground. No connections to the interwebs.
This is not quite true... just very limited access.

When my mother-in-law said she wanted to have the family go on a vacation, I was excited to spend time with the family.  I knew it would be fun and a relationship building experience. I have enjoyed spending time with Drew's family and this was not that different.

We hiked, took great photos, went to the top of the mountains, played games, slept in and read books. We went to the local mercantile for shopping and then for dinner and music during the week.  We wore ourselves out on the second day with a 5 mile hike.  I didn't do all of it. I am not in the best of shape and it was a hard hike for me. But the river was beautiful and refreshing.  I now have some goals to set for myself, which I am doing. (Go Me!)

Here is a look at the PoleBridge Mercantile:

We were excited to play Muchkin with the family as well as Guillotine!  We had fun explaining the game and seeing the giggles at the types of cards that came up. Drew's mom got the SuperMunchkin card and was enjoying stacking all the gear and classes as well as the second race she could have. Yes she kicked butt and won.  Drew won Guillotine.  It was great to play something we love with people we love.

The cabin was much bigger than I expected. It was at least 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. It was amazing.  And it also had enough space that the owners had part blocked off for them to stay in if they wanted to while they had visitors.

That is a tiny pic of Drew for perspective of the cabin.  I must say I just don't want to be here in the winter. It is too isolated for me.  As much as I enjoy the beauty of the area, I am truly a city girl. I will say this is one of my favorite things though:

Games Can Connect Us

I know, I know.. COMICCON.... But real life does distract.

So in the place of that here is my thoughts in regards to an awesome blog post I was linked. I will post about SDCC2012 soon! I promise.

I was out in the internet world and a friend sent me this blog post from Kate Cox on Kotaku.com. It was an interesting read about ways families connect through the games they play individually and as groups. The experiences she describes can be see in most families across America these days.

It reminded me of sharing games with my sister and brother and how they shared their games with me. At family gatherings my sister has become the person who brings the games we as a family play. This past Easter she brought Saboteur.

She introduced us to it and added the funny accent to imply that we were all French. She then got German accents and English accents thrown back at her. We all were intrigued by the factors of being either the "Miner" or the "Saboteur" as we "dug" our paths to find Gold or not.  It was great to see all of the family participating as well as the guests who had also joined us that evening.

Playing games as a family can bring people together when other things might distract like phones, social sites on devices or single person computer games. It is a way to build bridges when there are fall outs between people.  Doing things as a family that can be fun can help grow memories. Sappy sure, but more true than some of us may admit.

A great resource for finding games is your local game shop.  Mine is GOB or Games of Berkeley.  They have many types of games from RPGs to puzzles to miniatures for War Gaming to Tarot cards to  more card games than I can even begin to share.  They don't have video games as they aren't that kind of store. Their staff loves to share new games they have found and will play them with you in the store as well.

Another new resource I found is TableTop on the Geek and Sundry YouTube channel.  Wil Wheaton invites his friends over to play new games and share the fun with others.  I have discovered new games like Fiasco and rediscovered old ones like Munchkin.  It is a way to see others play and then learn about games before you buy them yourself.

The point is that games can help get us in touch with our families, build memories, share experiences and by and large communicate without the use of a screen. Old fashioned I know, but it is a great way to connect to people in your world even for an afternoon.

ComicCon2012 was amazing! There were so many different aspects of it that I will be sharing this over a few posts. I didn't bring the computer as I was sure I would have no time to post and I was correct. I will say the two big highlights for me were watching a couple get engaged during a panel that was being recorded to become a podcast and watching Neil deGrasse Tyson blow the Starship Smackdown panel away with his support of the Classic Enterprise captained by Captain America. Here is a taste of that moment: I will be posting more later this week. I am certain you all have been seeing so much of SDCC but I have a few things i want to make sure I recall for myself like W00tStock and going to Geeky and Sundry hangout as well as seeing Nathan Fillion at Zachary Levine's Nerd Machine HQ that there will be more. Stay tuned!

So here is my tentative planned schedule for SDCC 2012:

I know that it is got double items but I am just in the planning stages still. I want to make sure to see Gail Carriger at her table as well as John Scalzi with Paul & Storm just before him at the Tor Booth. So many choices! BTW if you don't know who Paul & Storm are you need to just watch this:

But again it will be terrific no matter what happens. I hope to also meet some of the ladies I follow on Tweeter like Amy and Jill but again it is a LARGE place. But I do hope that I can meet up with Ann W to give her Goggly Eyes to put in Bonnie B's room. All I am saying is Pictures please Ann!

Ok now back to the real job!
I am having a hard time with www.girlswithslingshots.com storyline right now.  I love Hazel and Zach! But Hazel is being a twit!  WHY??? I know it is how she would act but I am so sad. I like Zach and she will so regret this in the end. Ah well... sign of a good storyteller is you care about the characters even if they aren't real.

Thank you Danielle for such good characters and story lines.

For your enjoyment:

Who's writing our strong women super heros these days?

What do you all think about the new 52 from DC? I have not started any of them even though I did get the collected Wonder Women in the mail from the Red Bank Secret Stash(Thank you Michael!).

I went to the WonderCon panel about it and noticed that on stage there were no women. I know DC has women writers but for the launch panel discussion of the new 52 there were none represented. It made me wonder why that is. I know it is a hard field for women to get into as it has been a man's world mostly. But I also know there are many talented women comic book writers out there. Here is a GIANT list of them through the comic book history.

So why not have them on this panel? What is DC missing here? Sure Gail Simone and Ann Nocenti are writers on the list of the New 52 but why were they not there to show that women ARE writing? It made me wonder. Don't get me wrong, some of these guys i love but I am just saying there are only 2 women listed and they weren't on the panel representing that aspect of this new reboot of DC. I think this could really be a place for DC to shine if they really wanted to show that they are aware of this "new" aspect of their audience.

I am heading to ComicCon this year and I intent to do some asking. Understand I don't think I know much but I would love to know what is going on with comics that they seem to be missing this large potential market of women readership by not having comics write from some one who would understand their perspective.

I know some of you who see this know so much more than me, so please share your insights in the comments below.

I went and saw Rock of Ages this evening. I had seen the play when it was in San Francisco when it was touring so I knew what I was going to get.  I have to say I did like the play a little bit better than the movie as the story was fuller. It had more characters that interacted with the main ones.  I also felt that the ending of the play was more realistic.  But then again the play ending was more "grim" if you will. The movie was a "happier" ending.

Spoilers to follow:

The scenario is this:

Sherrie takes the bus to Los Angeles, and meets Drew when her precious rock LPs are stolen. Drew works behind the bar at the famous Bourbon club, and Drew gets Sherrie a job there too. Drew and Sherrie are both singers; they become close, and Sherrie helps Drew to overcome his stage fright.

The club is in dire financial straits and is relying on a gig by the enigmatic and unreliable rock god Stacie Jaxx and his band Arsenal to save them. When the opening act pulls out, Drew and his band get to open the show instead. A fellow waitress warns Sherrie that, once Drew gets into the spotlight, he'll forget about her.

Meanwhile Stacie Jaxx is being interviewed for Rolling Stone magazine by a pretty reporter, Constance Sack. He eventually instructs everyone else to leave, and tells her of his existential angst and the loneliness of sex without love. Her resistance to his rock god charm breaks down; she tells him she can meet his needs, and they engage in frantic sexual activity on the pool table.

Sherrie is instructed to bring a bottle of whisky to Jaxx. Through a misunderstanding, Drew thinks Jaxx and Sherrie made love, and when Drew comes off stage he rejects Sherrie.

Their lives take different courses; Sherrie quits the Bourbon, and desperate for money, she tries several jobs before ending up in a pole dancing lounge -- first as a waitress and then finally as a dancer. Drew is signed by Jaxx' manager, but when PR guys reject rock music as outdated, he is persuaded to join a boy band instead. He and Sherrie sing 'Here I go again on my own'; Jaxx too is shown lying in bed with a random female, thinking of someone else.

Drew and Sherrie finally meet again. The misunderstanding is cleared up, and then Drew finds Sherrie's stolen records for sale. He purchases them, returns them to her, and she attends his gig that night -- his boy band are opening for Stacie Jaxx in the Bourbon club. The boy band are booed off, and instead Drew and Sherrie duet on the song that he wrote for her. The song is a great success and catches the attention of Jaxx, who has been dramatically re-united with Constance. Jaxx adopts the song for his mega-band with Drew and Sherrie singing with him on stadium stages.

There is also a subsidiary plot in which Patricia Whitmore, the wife of the new mayor, rallies do-gooders to clean up The Strip by shutting down the Bourbon club and Stacie Jaxx in particular. However, it gradually emerges that she is an ex-Jaxx groupie whose passion against him is that of a woman scorned. Her humiliation is complete when Lonny from the Bourbon club produces an old LP with a picture of her as a groupie inside it. She sneaks into Jaxx' final show dressed in sexy black leather and dark glasses.

The play has Stacee Jaxx having sex with Sherri where as the movie has him almost getting it on with a Rolling Stone's reporter. This changes the reasons for some of the characters motivation. Also the Bourbon Room is threatened by a developer in the play and the city planner is fighting to keep the Bourbon Room alive verses in the movie it is the Mayor and his wife threatening to "clean up the city of the it's filth," as well as revenge for a jilted love affair.

In the film Jaxx doesn't end up a washed-up has-been and the couple ends up as a singing duo, Von Colt, verses a happy couple living a different dream in the valley. Everyone has their dreams renewed. It's a little on the "Gosh golly geee" end of movies for me as really not everyone has to have a superhappy ending but they did in this one. I am glad they left in the club owner finding happiness with his manager, both men. And the singing was really well done. I think having the couple make it  as singers was kinda sweet. But again I was expecting a similar message to the play which was " On The Strip, sometimes the dreams with which you enter are not always the dreams with which you leave, but they still rock"

Why start this at all?

I was thinking about all the lovely people I know who write and share their interests and I realized I re-share much of their stuff. I don't actually put my own full thoughts on topics I find interesting out into the world often enough. So I though "Why not? I love a bunch of stuff I know others might. I will create a place I can do just that."

So here it is.  It may be re-sharing stuff I love. It may be all new stuff that floats in my head. It may be stuff only I care about and no one else does. It may be Geeky. It may be NSFW. It may just be one liners. However, here is the place for me to do it.

Welcome to the Geeky Rose.
